Colossus: why Anthropic will probably keep paying $15bn a year

One of the prime sources I follow is suggesting that inference on its own is fairly profitable. I looked at this by considering the Anthropic/SpaceX Colossus data centre rental.

SpaceX and the Emperor’s new clothes

In this note I build a first pass cashflow model of orbital data centres as proposed by SpaceX. It finds they are unlikely to have a positive NPV: even with generous discounts the model needs an achieved price of about US$11.30 per watt-year against roughly US$8.50 achievable. I tested a wide range of sensitivities in coming to that conclusion. The note includes an explainer and a glossary for this new business. It could be a winner, but it’s one where demand for AI continues to grow incredibly fast, improvements in space technology happen at an unlikely pace, and the apparent revenue disadvantages of orbital data centres disappear.

The token industry: demand, supply, and who carries the GPU risk

GPUs are expected to be basically sold out for at least a couple more years. How long tight supply remains depends in part on how fast token demand grows. It’s not going to keep growing 5x–10x every year; even three more years at anything like that rate would be fortunate.

Opposition to data centres in the USA has increased, spreading out from specific community level concerns to a broader argument about the impact on electricity prices. These concerns could harden into a widespread movement opposing AI and data centres, matched by a counter-movement insisting “AI and data centres are wonderful”.
