Green grid demand

Demand is ITK’s estimate built from Fortescue’s FY26 energy use:
- About 2.2 TWh of existing electricity (800 GWh purchased, 236 GWh from North Star Junction solar, the rest from 10.9 PJ of gas), of which Iron Bridge magnetite processing is about 110 MW.
- Electrified diesel: 300 haul trucks’ worth of work (129 MW) and other mobile plant (110 MW).
- A balance of 36 MW for Green Metal and other new load.
Demand is treated as flat through the day and year.
Why Iron Bridge is shown separately. Iron Bridge has been slow to ramp up. It shipped 9.0 Mt of concentrate in FY26 against a nameplate capacity of 22 Mtpa, and Fortescue’s guidance is 11–14 Mt in FY27 and an annualised rate above 16 Mt during FY28. In FY26 Fortescue recognised a US$750m pre-tax impairment of Iron Bridge (US$525m after tax), reflecting “a revised ramp up schedule and a range of production scenarios”. Its 110 MW is a fifth of the grid’s demand, so the costs and returns are also shown without it (see the Iron Bridge page).
